Baking Directions
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour Pre heat your oven. Combine flour, 2 tablespoons sugar and salt in large bowl. Cut in 4 tablespoons of margarine and shortening with pastry blender or two knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add 4 to 6 tablespoons ice water, stirring with fork. Add additional ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until mixture forms soft dough. Divide dough into thirds. Shape 1 piece into disk; wrap in plastic wrap. Combine remaining 2 pieces dough, forming larger disk; wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate 30 minutes. Peel, remove seeds from apples. in a large bowl add lemon juice and thinly slice apples. Toss apples to coat slices with lemon juice to prevent browning. Add flour, cinnamon and nutmeg. Place bottom crust in the pie plate. Set top crust aside. Spoon apple pie filling into bottom pie crust. Dot apple pie filling with 2 tablespoons of butter. Cover apple pie with top crust. Fold pie crust edges over; crimp crust decoratively to seal. Cut 4 steam vent in the top crust. Brush the top crust with egg. Bake apple pie 50 to 60 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool for at least 1 1/2 hours before serving. Top with vanilla ice cream. |
