Grandma Apple Pie Recipe

This recipe adds a delicious twist to apple pie. Sliced, apples are mounded into a pie crust and topped with a lattice crust. Just before baking, a thick sugar syrup is poured carefully onto the crust.

1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie
1/2 cup unsalted butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup water
7 large Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored and sliced

Melt butter in a sauce pan. Stir in flour that will form a paste. Add sugar, brown sugar and water; bring flour mixture to a boil. Reduce temperature, simmer 3 minutes.

Meanwhile, place the bottom crust in your pie plate. Fill with apples, mounded in the center slightly. Cover apples with a lattice crust. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the and through the lattice crust. Pour slowly so it don't run off the crust and apples.

Bake apple pie for 15 minutes at 425°. Reduce the temperature to 350° and continue baking apple pie for 35 to 45 minutes.
